I know I’m late here, but it’s already been a week-and-a-half (and it’s only Wednesday!) so you’ll have to forgive me

This past Sunday Dave and I, along with 19,998 other people, participated in the Nike #WeRunJozi 10km race, which started on Katherine Street, in the affluent suburb of Sandton, and continued through the heart of Alexandra, one of South Africa’s poorest townships.
It was an honour to be included in the #MediaRuns challenge, which saw us hosted in a luxurious VIP tent at Innisfree Park, before and after the race.

We were shuttled from the tent to the start, which in itself was exciting as we were interviewed by 94.7 DJ Pabi Moloi, in a clip she called “Fast Dave & The Bucket of Chicken”
We were then plonked right at the front of the start, which was as scary as it was thrilling … I was PETRIFIED that I would be trampled by the thousands of enthusiastic runners behind me!

We sang the national anthem along with a choir and 5FM’s Poppy, before the starting gun went off and we began …
Thanks to advice from Tanya during my first 10km race, I started off slow, letting people pass me and not stressing about it. I used my arms and shuffled up the hills. I enjoyed the downhills and allowed my legs a rest from time to time, ensuring I stayed hydrated in the heat. I also took time to appreciate my surroundings, accepting the offers of high-5′s from spectators along the route.

It was hot and it was tough … but I made it. We all made it! Dave and I both achieved new personal bests – Dave in 53 minutes and me in 69! So chuffed!

This Friday, Nike will announce the two winners of the #MediaRuns challenge … not sure I stand a chance, with all of the serious runners who were included, but one can always dream!!!

Next stop run: #RunSoweto10km!!! Who’s with me?
